ONE OF THE biggest talking points from this year’s BAFTAs was the awkward interaction between actresses Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Lawrence.
71-year-old Lumley introduced Jennifer Lawrence to the audience as the ‘hottest actress on the planet’, only to have 27-year-old Jennifer come onto stage and say “That was a bit much, but thank you Joanna.”
People on Twitter weren’t impressed and believed that Lawrence had ‘insulted a national treasure’ and appeared ‘disrespectful’.
Lawrence wanted to clear the air, so in an interview with Ronan Keating (of all people) she explained herself.
While chatting with Keating on his Magic Radio Breakfast Show, Jennifer explained that backstage she had been joking with Joanna Lumley.
Knowing that Lumley was supposed to present her to the audience, Jennifer told her Joanna that she wanted to be described as “tall, beautiful, etc.” while being introduced. Jennifer jokingly told Joanna to use “adjective after adjective” and Joanna was simply like “All right, darling.”
When Lumley eventually introduced “the ravishing Jennifer Lawrence”, Jennifer joked that it was “a bit much”.
Lawrence then said:
Everybody thought I was being rude. But to be fair, I couldn’t have just walked out after she was like ‘biggest movie star in the world!!’ If I’d just walked out and gone ‘thank you Joanna’, it would have been like… ‘So you agree…? You think you’re really pretty?’
She was clearly just trying to avoid a Mean Girls moment.

Jennifer clarified to Ronan Keating, once again:
I wasn’t being rude. I mean, I’m always being rude. But it was an inside joke.
